Pejeng Community Center

In the small village of Pejeng, our team works with the community to protect local wildlife and their habitat. We also support organic farming and are helping develop sustainable tourism activities to benefit local people.

What do volunteers do?

We need volunteers with a range of skills, from people who can lend a hand in organic farms and gardens to wildlife monitoring and teaching English. No experience or qualifications are needed, but please let us know what skills and interests you have.

One of our current projects is to attract more eco-tourism to Pejeng. There are lots of ways volunteers can help with this, such as:

  • teaching hospitality skills and running conversational English lessons for the community
  • developing a Pejeng website and promoting the area on social media
  • organizing day trips and experiences for bloggers and journalists
  • cataloguing Pejeng’s heritage and signposting cultural and natural sites

Generally, our volunteers work two to four hours a day. That’s enough to play an important role and engage with the community, while giving you plenty of free time to explore and relax in Bali.

About Pejeng

Home to FNPF’s headquarters, Pejeng is a small traditional village surrounded by rice fields. It is the most extensive archaeological site in Bali and has 44 temples, most of them national heritage sites, and a pre-history museum. Pejeng is also a wildlife sanctuary and a paradise for bird watchers. Downtown has lively morning and night markets, and plenty of warungs where you can try the local food. Located 5km from the bustling town of Ubud, Pejeng is mostly unknown to tourists.

Volunteer fees

As a not-for-profit operation, all proceeds from volunteering help fund our projects. When you volunteer, not only do you get the chance to stay in a unique environment and help with conservation and community development projects, your fees also help pay for this vital work to continue.

Currently, we are unable to provide any volunteer accommodation at our HQ. However, you can stay in our associated local homestay or alternatively find your own accommodation. We work closely with Mai Organic Farm, where you can learn about organic farming, work with local artisans at a woodcarving workshop, and teach English to the children in the village.

In the Pejeng local homestay, it costs USD $24/day/person, including a homestay with breakfast, lunch and a donation to FNPF.

If you don’t stay at the local homestay and find independent accommodation, it costs USD $17.5/day/person (lunch and donation).
