Besikalung: habitat

Our Besikalung Wildlife Sanctuary is situated near Besikalung temple in Babahan village, Penebel, Tabanan Regency. Adjacent to a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site of traditional rice farming terraces, managed by the Balinese institution Subak.

Located on the slopes of Mount Batukaru, Bali’s second-highest peak at 2,276 meters, our sanctuary provides a haven for diverse wildlife. Batukaru’s dense forests make it one of the last remaining natural areas in Bali, and it serves as a crucial water source for the region.

To preserve wildlife habitat, we’ve planted various trees in Besikalung, restoring environments for species like the Bali Starling, civets, pangolins, and snakes. We run a nursery for saplings and practice organic farming, also distributing saplings to locals for planting in their own areas
