Nusa Penida: community

Our Nusa Penida we give back to the community who are helping us protect endangered birds from poachers and traffickers, and restore the island’s forest. These are some of the ways we support local people:

  • Each year we give away more than 30,000 saplings, which people can use for things like agroforestry, growing fruit and providing tree coverage.
  • Provide scholarships for high school and university students, and promote conservation education in schools.
  • Run a conservation classroom on wheels, a mobile community education van, that visits the island’s schools and villages.
  • Teach conversational English and organic farming.
  • Help people pursue value-added business ideas, including sustainable green business training workshops for local women’s groups.
  • Coordinate a microfinance goat bank. We loan goats to poor island families to breed, giving them an extra income source to assist with their children’s education.
  • Support local culture by providing traditional Balinese dance classes for children and helping weavers to revive traditional ikat-style weaving.
  • Bring international volunteers to the island to help with conservation efforts.

We’ve also built a community center – a conservation and sustainability volunteer village – on the island. The center is the headquarters for our Bali starling breeding program, sea turtle project, reforestation programs, and where we host volunteers. It also has organic market gardens and space for community development training.

Thanks to our donors who make this important work possible, including the Humane Society International (Australia), Australian Consulate in Bali, Maya Ubud Resort and Spa and the Rotary Club of Bali Seminyak.
