Volunteering at our rescue center, home to more than 40 endangered primates and birds, is a chance to gain experience in the care of animals and wildlife conservation. No qualifications or prior experience is necessary.
Most of the animals are victims of illegal trading, poaching or trafficking and have been confiscated from markets, homes or businesses where they were kept as pets or for entertainment. Our dedicated team looks after these animals with the aim of rehabilitating them and returning them to the wild.
We’re currently caring for many different species, including leaf monkeys, macaques, a sun bear, eagles, crocodiles, gibbons and peacocks. Unfortunately, many are too old or injured and will probably stay with us for the rest of their lives. For those that can be rehabilitated and released, the process is long, and there are few suitable release sites.
Our center, located on the outskirts of the town of Tabanan in central Bali, is one of only seven such facilities in the whole of Indonesia.
Volunteer life
Volunteers help with feeding and providing enrichment, along with cleaning and maintaining enclosures. Occasionally, volunteers might help with observing animal behavior. The handling of animals is not allowed under any circumstances. Our volunteers work alongside our team for three to five hours each day. Volunteers should be fit enough to work in a tropical climate and have the recommended vaccinations. A typical volunteer day starts at 6am with an hour of food preparation and feeding, followed by breakfast and then cleaning the enclosures from 8-9am. Gardening and maintenance are from 10am-noon, followed by an hour’s break for lunch. The volunteer shift finishes with animal enrichment from 1-2pm. All our volunteers stay in the rescue center’s main house. It has a simple bedroom with bunk beds, two toilets, a shower, a small kitchen for preparing meals, and a social area. Our center is small and can only take a few volunteers at a time. Volunteer fees, which include your accommodation, contribute to the center’s running costs. Because of the nature of the work and the time it takes to get familiar with the animals, we require a minimum stay of one week and a maximum of three weeks. As a not-for-profit operation, all proceeds from volunteering go directly toward our conservation projects. When you volunteer, not only do you get the chance to stay in a unique environment and help endangered animals, you also help fund our ongoing vital work.
