Founding Director & CEO
Bayu, who holds a degree in veterinary medicine from Bali's Udayana University, has had a passion for helping wildlife since he was a child. He has twice been nominated for Indonesia’s Kalpataru (Hero of the Earth) Award for conservation work. He has also received an Environment Pioneer Award from Bali's Governor. Bayu has extensive experience working closely with all levels of government and with the private sector. The quality of his work is demonstrated by Friends of Nature, People and Forests' (FNPF) successes and is evident in the trust placed in FNPF by organizations including Humane Society International, the Gibbon Foundation, Boeing Aerospace, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Australian government’s international aid department (AusAID). As Founding Director and CEO, he provides vital leadership and oversight. Bayu holds other directorships, including with Yayasan Bebali, which works in the field of traditional cultural revitalisation. He previously held a directorship with the Begawan Foundation, where he oversaw the breeding program for the critically endangered Bali starling and their subsequent release to FNPF's bird sanctuary on Nusa Penida island.

Petrus Basuki Budi Santoso
PROGRAM MANAGER
A dedicated forester and conservationist, Basuki holds a degree in Environmental Science from Mulawarman University in Samarinda, East Borneo. He headed FNPF’s forest restoration projects in Kalimantan (Borneo) at Pesalat and Beguruh in the Tanjung Puting National Park and Lamandau Reserve, and currently works on community-based agroforestry in the Kubung customary forest and Jerumbun. He previously worked in forestry and community development for organizations including Inhutani Batu Ampar and Long Bagun Ltd in East Borneo, and Bangun Kayu Irian Ltd in West Papua. His work as a surveyor has included assessing the impact of logging on sedimentation in the Kahala and Enggelam rivers in East Borneo, and conducting biodiversity surveys for the WWF Indonesia Project after the fires in Kutai National Park and the Muara Kaman and Batu Putih protected forests. His commitment to conservation was recognized in 2010 when Basuki was awarded “Youth Environment Pioneer'' by the Indonesian National Youth Committee Kotawaringin Barat Central Borneo.

Kalimantan Field Manager
Samsu, commonly known as Isam, is our Field Manager in Kalimantan. He was born nearby in Tanjung Puting National Park and has been part of FNPF Kalimantan for about 16 years. When he isn't planting and nurturing saplings, Isam is fighting the fires that continue to devastate the area, sometimes for weeks at a time. Over the years, he has witnessed the destruction caused by logging, mining, the palm oil industry, and the pollution and fires that have changed the way his family lives. Despite this, his respect and appreciation for the forest has only grown, and he loves and protects it fiercely.

Manager and Veterinarian at Bali Wildlife Rescue Center
Rinni, who comes from Yogyakarta, has dedicated her life to being a veterinarian. She joined us in 2014 as a vet at our Bali Wildlife Rescue Center and went on to become the center's manager. Following a two-year stint as an assistant at a clinical diagnostic laboratory, Rinni worked at the Kalaweit Indonesia Organization's rehabilitation and conservation center for gibbons and siamangs in 2012. While there, she successfully rescued and released animals including gibbons, siamangs and sun bears. At our rescue center in Bali, Rinni is helped by animal keepers Samson, Komand and Angga, as well as Gede, who looks after security.

Damai is our Assistant Director and also manager of our Nusa Penida site. He has worked in the NGO sector since 2004, starting out as a computer teacher and head of the Asah Asih Asuh Foundation Buitan-Bali/International Humanity Foundation. In 2007, he moved to Metropoli Foundation Indonesia in Amlapura, Bali - an organization dedicated to Balinese culture. He was their vice chairman, administrative coordinator and computer technician. Damai has previously worked as a teacher at elementary and junior high schools in Singaraja Bali and spent 10 years in the hotel industry.

Sugiarta, also known as Cakil, graduated in 1999 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine from Udayana University (Denpasar, Bali). He began his involvement with FNPF in 2000 as a Field Coordinator at Tanjung Puting National Park, Kalimantan (Borneo). For over 3 years, he ran the orangutan and sun bear rehabilitation programs, started the Pesalat land rehabilitation & reforestation program, and established the Pesalat conservation education program. In 2004, Cakil coordinated a feasibility survey to determine the possibility of Nusa Penida becoming a bird sanctuary and managed the Nusa Penida Bird Sanctuary Program for the next four years. In 2009, he founded the Genitri Foundation, an organization that focuses on conservation education. He joined Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) in 2010 as a veterinarian and also to bring an education program to this organization. He was also the vet in charge at the Bali Zoo clinic. Currently, he heads up our Bali starling conservation project at Besikalung Wildlife Sanctuary.
